Maker's Mark Bourbon, Knob Creek Bourbon, Johnny Walker black label blended Scotch, Chivas Regal blended Scotch, Laphroaig 10 year single malt Scotch...the list goes on.

The possibllities are even better in a price range above Crown because you enter the realm of well aged single malts, older and rarer bourbons, and more selectively blended blends.

They are very different. Jack Daniels is a Tennessee Whiskey, a close cousin to bourbon. It is mainly made from corn and has a sweet sort of finish. It is aged in Oak which gives it some mellowing, and charcoal filtered. Crown Royal is a Canadian Whiskey. The Canadian Whiskeys are not known for their outstanding, bold flavors. They are noted for their "smoothness" (while that sounds like a good thing, it really translates to boring) How about Old Forester Signature? It's a great whiskey, won some awards and got excellent reviews, but isn't fru-fru. Hangs well with the muscle car set.

Crown Royal is a hard whiskey to compete, the smooth taste, melow flavor without the best canadian whiskey that there is. Jack Danials #7 for the american choice maybe.

They're both whiskies, but different types. If he's into Jack Daniels, look in the bourbon/rye/American whiskey section: As well as Jack, look at Wild Turkey, Jim Beam, George Dickel, etc. or the choice of the experienced, cost-conscious drunks in my 'hood: Evan Williams!

Best Canadian Whiskey = Forty Creeks Barrel Select [Excellent sipping whiskey, but pricey]
Best alt to Crown for buck = Potter's Crown Canadian Whiskey. [My advise, save your money and sip on Potter's and you will still have money to go play and pay for the hotel room!] I like it better than RC, anyway, and it can be found for sub $10.00 a liter.

Makers Mark is good and I think it's a tad cheaper than crown.

A lot of my friends LOVE Knob Creek, but it gave me a terrible hangover... or maybe I drank too much :)

Makers Mark Bourbon beats it hands down! So good you don't even have to have mix. I use mix anyway though. How ironic is that? Two great reviews at the same time! I think it's your destiny.
