When I was a big, fat fella years ago, my 'thing' was sandwiches.
I cut them out, completely, tried to eat as much fruit and veg as I could but, because, I had no bread (my big weakness) I could pretty much eat whatever I wanted.
It worked, although I still have to be wary about eating bread.
So, if your 'thing' is, say, chocolate, cake, Pepsi, bread (some of the faves!) then cut out your fave COMPLETELY and enjoy everything else in moderation, doesn't feel like a diet so much.

Firstly it's better to build up going to the gym gradually and better to go every other day. If you go every day starting from next week by a couple of months - 1. you will be knackered and 2. your weight loss will stop.
Your body gets used to the exercise so you need to keep gradually building it up, you also need to vary the exercise you do.
As for going on a strict diet, how long do you think you could stick to it? And even if you can for the whole 6months, after that you will go back to your bad habits and put weight on again. If you want to lose the weight long term it's better to change your eating habits, eating healthier but still things you like.
Eat healthy regular meals (skipping meals will not help you).
Drink a minimum of 2 litres of water a day (do not drink whilst eating, this dilutes the digestive fluids in your stomach so your body cannot digest food properly).
Eat slowly and chew your food properly (this also helps digestion).
Cut down your fat and sugar intake, also tea/coffee, alcohol and fizzy pop etc....
If you completely stop eating the things you like you will find it very difficult, no matter how serious you are. It's much better to cut down! For example, instead of eating a deep pan pizza with chips, have 2 small slices of thin pizza with salad.
You can easily lose 3/4 stone in 6 months if you do this. Hope this helps, it has helped me!
Good luck x
EDIT - I've just read your additional information.
I didn't eat much either, it was snacking that was my problem too. If you sit and write down what you eat in a day it's shocking. Plus even though you're not eating much it's what you're eating that's the problem. Everything is good for you in moderation!

It sounds to me like you are in serious danger of making yourself miserable and if you do that, you will give up and you won't suceed. The only sucessful way to long term sustainable weight loss is to change your lifestyle. You need to make changes you can live with for the rest of your life. If you don't do that, once you have attained your ideal weight, you will revert to old habits and before you know it be back to your old size, or slightly bigger.
It seems you are viewing your excess weight as being your problem. It isn't. Excess weight is the symptom of a problem. It is the biological effect of eating more calories than you use. If you want to get to size 14 and stay there you need to understand, what and why you are over eating and change that.
You have already identified that lack of vegetables may be an issue for you. Don't force yourself to eat things you don't enjoy, try experimenting with new ways to introduce vegetables into your diet that you will enjoy. For example, my husband mixes finely shredded vegetables with the meat when he makes burgers, you seriously wouldn't know they were there.
Increasing your exercise levels is a great idea but make sure you enjoy it or you'll find any excuse to stop. If you find the gym isn't for you look for alternatives like dance classes. It's great that you have your mum's support and she has yours, but make sure that is a support, not a crutch, because if one of you stops for any reason, the other one should be able to continue.
If you can't manage on your own, join weight watchers, it is the simpliest and most effective eating program for attaining long term sustainable weight loss.
Good luck

Losing weight is a simple equation: if you burn more calories than you eat, the weight will come off. Start off by estimating how many calories you burn each day using the calorie calculator http://straighthealth.com/pages/tools/caloriecalclb.html This will give you an idea of how many calories to eat. Healthy weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week. To lose 1 pound per week you need to create a calorie deficit (burn more than you eat) of 500 calories per day. To lose 2 pounds a week, you have to double the deficit to 1000 calories per day. You can achieve this by eating less, exercising more or a combination of both.
