Either his *** itches or he has worms, more likely worms. Worms are common in puppies. Take him to the vet to get him checked.XOXO Trista

Like it itches?? Seriously, this can indicate a irritation as with worms. They do it to finish cleaning off back there after a poop. And some dogs have problems with the anal glands and a vet has to clean that out. Kinda nasty.
Pups are inclined to needing deworming several times starting about 5-6 wks, in order to get all the worms and baby worms. If you haven;t had him to a vet it is really important. Then you will know for sure he is ok. OTC deworming meds do not take care of all the types of worms!! Vets use ones that get any and all before they do serious internal damage.

1. He might just have an itch.
2. His anal sacs might be full. Anal sacs are these two glands that produce the dog's individual "scent." They are located on both sides of the rectum. Occasionally they get too full, and the pressure is uncomfortable and sometimes extremely painful. The dog will "scoot" to try to empty them (to some extent). The vet or groomer can empty these if you do not know how (I wouldn't recommend it because the smell is AWEFUL!!!)
3. He may have worms. If you have a puppy, and you have taken him to the vet recently, this may not be the case (they do fecal samples and it would show up). To be safe, call your vet and arrange a check up and make sure to bring them a fecal sample. If your dog isn't vomitting or having diarrhea it may not be worms, but please have it checked out so that your do does not spread them around.

Lol, it isn't always worms...more than likely he just needs his anal glands checked/expressed. Yeah, that sounds really gross, and believe me, the smell of the fluid is absolutely disgusting, too. There are 2 small glands on either side of a dog's, uh, bottom. When they poop, a little fluid is expressed with the poo, leaving their 'personal calling card'. It is very much like when male dogs mark their territory with urine. Same idea, different 'area'.
Anyway, have your pup screened for worms REGARDLESS. You may be (un)pleasantly surprised at what they find. Most puppies will be positive for at least one type of worm :( The vet can check the anal glands in the same visit.

Depending on what kind of dog you have, your dog may have anal glands that need to be expressed. A couple of breeds of dogs have glands inside their anus that have to be manually expressed every couple of weeks. I had a poodle and he would scoot like that whenever they needed to be expressed. If you take your dog to the vet, they will do it for you for a small fee, or some dog groomers will do it for you also.

it doesnt necessarily mean that it has worms. my dog does it and she does it because she has a lot of hair and sometimes her feces gets stuck in it or around her butt and she wipes it off and itches it this way.

Usually it's because they just went crap and their behind feels itchy, but it could also be, yuck, WORMS, so you should take him to the vet just in case.
