My grandfather has been taking Vytorin, but like many cholesterol medications he has side effects including pain and weakness in his legs. His doctors tell him they will all cause that. He is very frustrated with the difficulty he has with walking. Are there any prescription meds that won't have this side effect or herbal remedies known to help?

Get him to ask his Doctor about Lipitor. I use this and has no side effects.

Have a look around for butter that reduces absorption of Cholesterol, we have it here in Australia, but depending which country you are from, you may not have it. Also a diet high in Omega3 may help as well.

My doctor prescribed fish oil in addition to cholesterol meds for me...the brand name is OMACOR. Since this is a derivative--highly concentrated from fish I doubt much should interfere with it....unless there is a fish allergy I am not aware of. Check it out.

I prefer this form of fish oil since some of the brands off the "Wal-mart" shelves can leave you burping up fish smells and whatnot at a later time.

Red yeast rice works well in lowering cholesterol and contains statins(which are the same elements that prescription medications contain). However, all statins have the possibility of damaging the liver so it is best to take the red yeast rice along with milk thistle(protects the liver from statin damage). Please make sure his doctor knows if he decides to take it.
