Reduce---
Replace incandecents with CFL's
Turn off or unplug items that aren't in use... Tv, lights, radio
put low flow high pressure nossles on your shower heads
change your toilet to a rapid flush system (uses 1.6 gal per flush)
Reuse---
Take plastic bags from the grocery stores back to the stores to reuse on your next trip.
turn tin cans into storage containers
Compost
Recycle---
Cans (aluminum, steel)
Plastic #'s1-7 minus 6 in some areas (check with your local recycling center)
Paper (rule of thumb, if you can tear it you can recycle it)
Cardboard products (egg carton's not accepted in most areas)
Glass (remove lables and lids, clean them and sort. exclude blue glass. the smallest amount makes a batch unusable to manufacturers)
Clothes (donate good condition to charities, unwearables can be turned into insulation and paper-check for centers in your area.)
oil--- can be remade or burned as fuel
batteries (some can be converted into new ones others can be turned into new products using the nickle, copper and tin present in alkalines.
rubber tires (can be remade into new tires, shoe soles, playground bases and much more. those that are not recycled can be burnt at power plants and cement factories to produce power and as a by product pot ash.)
This is just a brief over view.

1.) don't drive when you can walk or ride a bike
2.) change your oil filter, air filter, oil and keep your tires inflated correctly - these things help to maximize engine efficiency
3.) roll down the window in your car and open windows at home if its hot out rather than turn on the AC in summer
4.) put a sweater on rather than turn up the heat in winter
5.) open the fridge/freezer and take a look then close it and make a decission rather than hold them open and stare at all the choices
6.) compost (great idea whoever said it) rather than use the garbage disposal
7.) turn off lights you don't need when you are in the room
8.) bring not plastic, not paper but cloth bags to the grocery store - some stores give you a small discount for doing so.
9.) When grilling, share the heat with your neighbors - socialize and use less charcoal/gas at the same time.
10.) take short showers rather than baths.
For home builders:
11.) Use long lasting, energy efficient light bulbs. Better yet, use LED lighting at night and sunlight channeled with fiber optics during the day.
12.) look into green energy sources - why use oil heating if you could have solar power? why use natural gas for heat if you could get a wind generator and do the same with electricity? Why pay for heating when a greenhouse connected to the rest of the home would collect and distribute heat year round? Why power AC circulation when the heating and cooling effect itself would circulate air from the roof to underground tubing that stays an even 65 degrees year-round? Etc.,...
13.) Consider an underground home - its naturally energy efficient and are relatively speaking, structurally immune to things like tornadoes which keeps insurance costs lower in tornado areas.
14.) Don't build big just because you can, rather build what you need - you can always expand later if you like.
15.) Small numbers of large rooms are nice, but larger numbers of small rooms is efficient over time.

i won't repeat the stuff the guy above me listed- there are some good ones in there.
-stop drinking bottled water- a staggering amount of fossil fuel is burned to move water around. if u don't like the taste of your tap water- buy a filtration system.
-consider a geothermal heating system for your home. solar seems to be in vogue- but solar is expensive unless you get a subsidy from your state, live in a sunny geography and you are installing a new roof already. geothermal is far cheaper- especially if you are tearing up your yard for another reason. for those not familiar- pipes are buried under your lawn and use underground heat to warm the house during the winter, and cool it during the summer. it doesn't just reduce pollution, it reduces electricty bills by a lot.
-don't flush when u pee- just when you poo. turn off the sink when you are brushing/shaving/etc.
-put heat/ac on a timer system- avoid usage during daytime hours when you are out at work/school and come home to a comfortable house.
-use cloth garment bags for dry cleaning to avoid plastic bag waste, reuse metal hangers as well.
i'll think of some more.

Simple....despite of 10 WAYS...actually, there's only 1 WAY..... BE A GOOD ENVIRONMENTAL CITIZEN!
yet, its the toughest thing to do...isn't it? Lots of effort have been put up to conserve the environment, especially to minimize the pollution and wastes that contributed by human activities. I believe billions of dollars and cent had been spent to ensure our environment is protected and preserved. Few programes have been introduced to the people to enhance their awareness towards their environment! Nevertheless, we can't stop people from chopping trees, develop new buildings and etc....why? we need those resources to live....for development!....so next step, the best solution of all....is a SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT!
