If he is stationed on an aircraft carrier, he is part of their security force. Aircraft carriers do not carry combat Marines. There are other ships that do that. So when you say AIRCRAFT CARRIER, I assume you're talking about the type that carries fighter jets. When I was on the USS Nimitz CVN-68, all we had was a security force....GREAT GUYS! When carriers pull into a liberty port, they have to anchor out because most ports are too shallow for a carrier and there IS the security of the carrier to take in to question. The sailors and Marines then ride liberty boats to the pier to go on liberty. The last time a U.S. aircraft carrier was bombed was during WW2.
How long does it take to get from the West coast to the Persian gulf? It depends on the urgency to get there. Often they hit a couple of liberty ports on the way.
If you want to know about Iraq and our troops, watch the news, read the news magazines, read the newspapers. There's just too much to include here.

Nobody can guarantee anything. However, if he is assigned to a ship, chances are he will not see action. In both the Persian Gulf War & the Iraq War, no Navy ships have been fired upon that I am aware of. To the best of my knowledge, only 1 US Navy vessel has been attacked during the past 17 years - the USS Cole was hit in a terrorist attack in the 90s. Although there were casualties, most of the crew were not injured.
Of course, in a war situation, things can change. But I would say being on a ship is much safer than on the ground.
My son just returned from Iraq & my grandson will soon be shipping out. Both are in the army & both are OK with it. So am I.

as far as your being ok that's hard to say, he has a dangerous job even if wasn't engaging the enemy. they have bombed aircraft carriers but it hasn't happened in a long time. it will take a couple of months to get on station and then be there for a while he may be back by Christmas! wouldn't that be good? just pray for your brother and all military people and be proud of what they do. write him all the time and send him care packages. marines are on carriers for " special" reasons i cannot discuss, but you can be sure if your brother is assigned to a carriers "marine detachment" he has a very special job

If he is a member of the ships Marine security detachment, he will stay snug as a bug aboard the carrier which will be on station in the Persian Gulf, and contrary to what everyone has said he WILL NOT set foot in the country of Iraq.

I know it's not U.S. force but it will give you a LOT of very useful facts about Iraq which you may find helpful to you at this time.
The only thing Friends, relatives and Joe Public NEED to do is fully support each and every one of the troops be they on the ground, on the seas or in the air.
They are doing a job we would not WANT to do, and doing it without question or hesitation... as trained to do.
I wish you well, it's sometimes harder for loved ones than the actual serviceman/woman because all they can do is wait for news or contact... it's always the waiting is the hardest to bear. The squaddie has a job to do, is well trained for that job, and just needs the right equipment and resources available to each one in order to get the job completed.
The one thing missing from that list which you and everyone else can provide - is your full support. Your brother is supporting his colleagues and mates in difficult times there.

If your brother is a Marine, he will only be using the Aircraft Carrier as transportation to Iraq and will be on the ground there... it is a very dangerous place to be and you will worry every day until he comes home, but he is well trained, has joined of his own accord and there are many more troops who come home from Iraq than die in Iraq. I'm sure that doesn't make it any easier, but you'll get through it...

There is no grantee, however that your brother will be safe any more that I can grantee your safty on the road. Just pray for him and remember that he is serving with honor. Okay, for one thing, you need to chill. He's under enough stress without having to watch you freak out. It can up to a 7-10 days to get to Iraq. They have to stop along the way. I don't think there's much chance of attack on a carrier. The Marines generally do not hangout on the carriers, they go into the country. My husband is currently in iraq and has been since September. He's been shot at, dodged mortars. it's all part of the job. And my hubby is only Air Force! They are as protected as they can be. they are issued good gear and if your bro has a good head on his shoulders, he'll be fine. He's trained for this, he knows waht he is doing. Stop freaking out and start supporting him. make sure you send lots of letters and care packages. he's needs your support, not your fear!

He went over with the Ronald Regan. He's fine, since he's a non-combat MOS. I doubt he'll even see any action. More than likely to die from boredom than combat since he's based ON the carrier. he's got about a month long voyage on a boat, and nobody bombs carriers anymore.
