Yes...at least that's what is on the news. They'll shortly be pulling out 1,500 troops.

There seems to be a significant difference of opinion as to wether Britain will or won't pull out, and if they do wether it will be a good or bad thing.

All we know is that England has begun to leak that there is a possibility that the office of the Prime Minister is considering announcing their intention to reduce the number of troops in Iraq by up to 2000 personell, which will still leave them with about 5000 still in Iraq.

Could that be any more vague?

Just for reference purposes, Australia has only about 550 troops in Iraq, so the current argument by the Australian government and supporting media is "If we pull out a percentage of our troops, we won't have enough there for them to suppport each other in their mission. For us, it's all or nothing." not that our all is a lot or anything ... our presence is far more symbolic than combatively supportive.

Those are the facts. I'm excercising my right not to add my feelings on wether England are doing a good or bad thing, or wether we should follow. If I did, this answer would be 15 paragraphs long. Suffice to say I'm not holding my breath either way.

Yes, Brits are being pulled out.

Aussies are still there, but not because of popular opinion.
Mostly, our Prime Minister, John Howard, is following George Bush's lead.
Howard was sitting in the White House waiting for a meeting with Bush when the planes hit the pentagon and other places. For him, it's personal.

The Iraq war is a total disaster and will only result in more misery the longer it goes on. Get out and let the Iraq people sort it out. That will mean a short term increase in loss of life, and maybe a little bit of genocide, but I suspect far less fatalities than the present situation. Lead the way Britain.

It seems for the last six months withdrawal been considered and planned secretly. It is a phased reduction with some leaving soon.

No matter what your view, no one said the troops are there to stay forever.

According to this evening's news, the Brits are reducing their numbers because they are now a hindrance to peace in Basra, where they have gone from being welcomed to being targeted.
