I've been depressed a lot lately and was wondering if it could damage my health. I know that depression causes emotional and physical problems, but I was just wondering if it puts me at risk for other stuff too. Like cancer, heart problems, etc. Anyone know?

First do not go to a doctor because they classified depression a disease , they are required by law to treat it with pills , OK the pills only treat the symptoms not the cause , and when you stop taking the meds, you have more problems ,you should go talk to a mental health specialist and tell them to help you find the problem causing the depression ,and help you find a solution , and help you find ways to deal with the problems, and find a resolution without medication..my girlfriend was unable to deal with life's problems (diagnosed with borderline personality disorder) which means she never dealt with her problems just kept them bottled up ...she did the therapy(( instead of the medication as recommended by so many doctors)) ..she is 100% better in less than6 months versus two or more years buying and taking medications ....all you need to do if you can not do it alone is get help( therapist) to find the problem..not treat the symptoms ..hope this helps some .. good luck ..((doctor's can only treat with a prescription medication it is required by law)) so save your sanity and your health and use alternative treatments depression is not the end of life ..it is an obstacle as a result of not being able to properly cope with certain problems that lead up to the state of being depressed....Ask a therapist or alternative medicine doctor , a medical doctor will say you need a pill because they have to ....I know based on experience of dealing with my girlfriend of 10 years who who had depression.

Depression occurs among many Americans every year. My buddy actually is suffering from it right now and it has lead him down the path of excessive drinking and smoking so yes depression could cause problems if not treated. Also if you look for something to cling to and know as a source of comfort that would help like some type of religion. I highly recommend some type of faith because many members of my congregation has came to our church and found help with one-on-one conversations with our pastors. Best of luck to you and hope all gets better. God bless you.

Go to your doctor.

Depression will cause you to ignore obvious health problems, or to make bad decisions in regards to your health.

Depression is a medical problem and is definately treatable.
