Hi Wyllie23,
My name is Ricardo Souza and i from Sao Paulo, Brazil. The better answer to your question is nobody knows. Must be thousands or millons. Trere is a forest here called atlantic forest, that i discovered last week, have a world´s biggest diversity of species but is not the biggest in area. In some places have 450 species of trees by hectare (1 hectare = 100m x 100m = 328 ftx 328 ft), but since 1500, when the Brazil was discovered by Portugueses and by to be near to sea, 92% of atlantic forest was destroied. Actually, it is protected and many peoples are buying portions of forest to reforest with originals trees. I dont know what is said on australian Media, but the brazilian people hate the forests destruction in Brazil and other countries too. But here, the people is most concentrated near sea, far amazonia and this is a problem to control the destruction. The destruction of Atlantic forest took a lot time, because until 30 or 40 years ago , to kill forests was called progress, evolution.
In Amazonia, because distance, 83% of forest is alive. Sometimes someone says on TV: More one specie of monkey was discovered in Amazonia...but what is more in focus on media here is "we need to break the destruction because this affect the world and number of species".
Probably 25% of species of the world are in Brazil.

I was watching a special about the French Foreign Legion and they say that the Amazon is so dense that they have only scratched the surface as to number of species of animal in Brazil. Many undiscovered species are estimated in the Amazon.

Since Brazil holds a major part of the world's Rain forests. It is impossible to even guess. Dozens of new species are discovered everyday but even more species die off.
