I asked myself the very same question when I got engaged. I have two sisters and I could not choose who I wanted to be my maid of honor. So I decided "It's my wedding and I'll do what I want!" I am having both of them as my maids of honor. My fiance's mother made a rude remark about it but who cares! I am not going to let someone else ruin my day! And as it turns out my fiance loved the idea because he can have his 2 best friends as best men instead of picking just one.
Remember that no matter what anyone else says, it is all about you and your soon to be husband!! Do what you want and enjoy!!

I did my daughters were 18 and 17 when I got married and they were both my maids of honor. their dresses were different from the rest of the party and then slightly different from each other. They both enjoyed being a major part our special day where with my marriage to my new husband created a new family for all of us.

there is no specific role that says you cant. Its your wedding. I was ina wedding that had two and she made sure they were signified by having them wear a different sash color on their dress with a slightly larger bouquet.
And for the other comment a matron of honor represents a married honor attendant. Not a second attendant. There is no specific term for two attendants.

Do whatever you want. I know some people have both a maid and matron of honor (if one's married).

Sure. Just divide up the MOH duties between them both. Have one hold your bouquet during the ceremony and the other arrange your train before walking back down the aisle. Have one host your bridal shower and the other sign your marriage documents. You could even have your groom's best man escort them both down the aisle at the end of the ceremony, one on each arm.
It's entirely up to you how to do it - it's your wedding and you're the boss.
