It's not the download systems that are Illegal, it's the content that you choose to download that is illegal. Limeware is not illegal to use, it's only illegal to upload (I do beleive it's the uploaders that are being targetted these days, not the downloaders) and download certain things.
You can probably get away with Youtube for seeing most anything (except long movies, but give it time) video related,
Bittorrent is small/lightweight on your system in that it does not start up some big honking java app etc..bittornado launches per torrent download that it's working on. does not utilize spy ware, and typically the only viruses you are going to download are in the files you downloading in and of themselves.
You could always use Itunes...

Hi
Ok , first if you are looking to download , songs , videos , movies etc etc , then im sorry to say YOU HAVE TO PAY . Since you mention limewire i guess you mean , a software that will let you search for anything right ??/ Well if this is the case , then go to
www.tucows.com or www.download.com and enter the internet tab , there it should be p2p software , the file sharing software etc etc .

well the only completely free downloadable ones i know are illegal. Limewire. u can also download youtube videos. there are lots of websites you can listen to music free, but not download. if your really in a trap, go to one of those, like yahoo or aol, or anything really, and then play the song and record it with your microphone (it shoudl be built into your computer) and then save the song that way

I've used Shareaza for awhile now. Very easy to use, doesn't slow down my computer. Allows multiple down loads at the same time and easy configuration - I'm not a computer guy and I had no trouble. search by title, author, group, album name, file type (mp3/wma/avi, etc) Oh...it's FREE! Good luck.

nothing wrong with limewire
but - fall into good practice by keeping your anti virus program updated on a regular basis
and always scan the files you download with your anti virus program before opening / playing them
another program you can try is WinMX

torrents are great, if you are the one in 50,000 who get caught, you get a mean letter in the mail from riaa. Its not Illegal yet, but its certainly not legal either. only a handful of people have ever been in real trouble, and their the ones who own the websites who host the tracker.

Itunes... This software is free and legal and has no virsues or spywares, but you have to buy your music and videos though. That's what I do 99c for a song is so damn cheap and $1.99 for a video is just so damn cheap.
