NOTE: If you're just going to say "Don't do it, piercings suck!" then I'd really rather you didn't post at all...

I've wanted a nostril piercing for a long time, and I was wondering if it's better to get a captive bead ring or a stud as the first jewelry for it? How do you keep it clean and avoid infection?

I've also been toying with the idea of a lip piercing. I know that labret piercings can erode the gums and teeth, but what about if it's more on the lip, and off to the side? This is what I want: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/19905789/?qo=57&q=by%3Asickgirl23&qh=sort%3Atime+-in%3Ascraps
How do you take care of lip piercings? Do you have to be careful when you eat?

Oh, and if I let the lip piercing close, how bad will the scar be (for the placement in the pic)?

Once a lip piercing is closed up, it doesn't affect kissing, eating, etc. right?

Nostril and lip piercings are fairly easy to handle and usually heal up quickly and problem free. As long as you take care of them, you'll be fine.

For nostrils, its a matter of personal preference. Usually girls that get it done have it done with a gem nose screw some (like me) will have it done with a CBR. As long as the jewelry is a bit longer in length to adjust for minor swelling, it doesn't matter which one you choose. The piercing will take 3-4 months to heal and during that time its important to keep it clean. You'll clean the outside twice daily with Dial soap and water, be sure to rinse the area well. For the inside and for any crust that builds up, use a q-tip that has been soaked in a salt soak to wipe away crust and to clean the inside. After 6-8 weeks, only clean the area once daily. Do not play with the area and only touch it when you are cleaning it, do not change the jewelry for at least 3 months to ensure full and proper healing.

With lip piercings of ANY location, damage can be done to teeth and gums. Though location and type of jewelry can greatly reduce damage. With the a side lip piercing like the one in the piercing, you are more likely to bite on the jewelry than anything else. Its important that when you get the piercing that proper sized jewelry is used because your lip may swell. Lip piercings take about 3 months to heal. Keep in mind care will have to be taken so you don't bite on your lip or the jewelry while you are adjusting to having the piercing. Cleaning this piercing is very easy. The outside is cleaned with Dial soap and water twice daily, you use a q-tip to remove any buildup that is there. Use Biotene or salt water to rinse the inside after brushing your teeth, eating, drinking, smoking. Start using a new tooth brush immediately upon getting the piercing and use care while brushing as to not knock the jewelry around too much.

Do not use Bactine, Neosporin, alcohol, peroxide, regular mouthwashes (they have too much alcohol in them) and any other harsh cleaner. While they do work well for some people, they can prolong healing and irritate piercings.

In case you aren't sure about sea salt soaks, read more about it here:

All in all, go to a reputable and skilled piercer and take care of your piercings. As long as you do that, you won't have infections or healing problems. Good luck.

Oh yea, if you take the piercing out, for a while it will look like a little white dot by your lip, over time as the scar tissue is broken down it will become less visible.

lol isn't it funny how many people say it sucks? well i have both of those piercings done and actually just got my lip pierced a few days ago. Okay, so with the nostril I suggest a stud because it just sits there and you don't have to do much but clean it with a warm water mixed with some sea salt and then you just dip a cotton ball in it and set it on your piercing for 3-5 minutes.
Now with the lip it'll swell the first 3-5days and I have also heard that it will ruin your gums and teeth but I have learned about a labret earring that is called bioplast. After your piercing has healed and you can start putting earrings in I suggest a labret bioplast. Its a stud and the back of it isn't metal but a soft plastic that won't irritate your gums. The ring that you want won't irritate as much I don't think. I must be honest and say I don't know much about rings, I'm not a big fan. With lip piercings you have to clean after everything you eat or drink something with the exception of water for the first 30 days and keep your hands and anything else out of your mouth. Kissing and smoking is highly recommended to avoid the first 30 days because of all the bacteria. You dilute mouthwash with water thats all and then the outside you do the same you do with the nose. Wheeew this is long. I hope I was helpful. The piercings are defiantly worth it!

I would suggest a bead ring as it will be a little easier to clean while the piercing is new. As for a lip, any piercing can cause problems if you don't keep it clean. Clean it with a non-alcohol mouth wash your piercer can give you a few brands that are good and available in your area. When you first get your piercing stay away from spicy or salty foods as they can cause some pretty bad pain (imagine lemon or chili in your open wound, OUCH!) but other than that eat what you want and what is comfortable. Piercing can be great, I have had a few for many years and will never get rid of mine. Just keep'em clean and treat them right and you will have no problems.

Lip rings are all sorts of problems b/c it makes eating and kissing awkward and even sometimes painful. But if you really want it then go for it. You just have to be dedicate for caring for it. It was also the most painful peircing I've ever had.

I think that a stud is really pretty for a nostril piercing. You can get a cleaning solution at the place that peirces your nose, but rubbing alcohol also works well.

I know you won't like my answer, but I feel compelled to give you my opinion. For the nose piercing its better to get a stud in the beginning, you can twirl it around to keep the hole open much easier and also it won't get hooked on anything while your sleeping. When they do the piercing they likely sell you some solution, buy it, because it helps keep infections away and cleans at the same time. However I do not believe in lip piercing, if you want some in your mouth, go for the tongue. That also is a lot easier to keep clean and you will get used to the talking and eating with it quite easily and if you ever decide to take it out it will not leave a small hole by your lip. And believe me one of these days you need to get it out, as good paying jobs do not go to those who pierce their lips.
All the people I know with nipple piercing, belly button piercing ( which I like best) and tongue piercing mentioned only a few days of discomfort.
I hope I helped you make a decision.

for the nose, i would start with either a stud or a bone. a captive has more of a chance of getting caught or irritated if yu are not used to it. also, in case you run into issues with school/job not wanting you to have it pierced, a captive is a lot harder to hide.

for the lip, there is the potential for mouth problems but if you use dental safe acrylic pieces instead of metal it is a little safer

Stud is most likely to feel more comfortable. Take it out when you eat. It's hard and with mine I just ate mushy foods for 6 weeks. (plus i lost weight!) with it in. Lip peircings scared me at first. But once you get it it's not that bad but If your the type that's sensitive and you don't think you can handle. I would say it's a No.

my brother-in-law's sister had at one time like 14 piercings and she has kept most of them in, but her nose piercing is a stud and she says it hurts like hell to take it out or like switch it with a different barbel, but anyways, most of the time piercers will say do the stud because when i got my belly ring, they told me to put in one that was just a ball at the end and not like a dreamcatcher, or playboy bunny or whatever because it would snag on my shirt and could rip it out which would be extremely painful! but with a nose bead ring it could snatch on tops when you take them off so that would hurt too! i think it would hurt more.
