Rocks have eroded by wind, things may have been bleached by sun. Plantlife and animal life could have changed over time due to climate shifts. Deserts can "grow" over long periods of time, even from oceans. Things such as features change, like rocks into sand, or large rocks into small rocks. Sometimes rivers make large canyons.

Global warming, deforestation.

Egypt was one of the most developed countries in the world. Its development led to the deforestation of the land and today, it is a semi ard land. Ever seen the pictures in its pyramids? They told accounts of royal family members and nobles hunting lions. How can they hunt for lions if it is an semi arid land?

What about Libya and the Sahara?
