I have windows XP and i'm trying to get into DOS so i can do my old c:format c: . I can find the obvious comand prompt in windows but i need the true comand prompt by restarting. I miss the old Win 98 "restart in DOS mode"

You boot from the XP cd and run through the steps, itll eventually get to the format part after you set the partition.

Theres two ways to format a drive

1) When you put the windows installation cd in it will ask you while installing it, this is the way you want to do it if you are reinstalling windows.

2) If you right click on a drive and go to format from with in my computer is the way you want to do it if your formating a secondary partition/drive.

You can't reformat a drive your running Windows from. You'll need to boot from a CD or Floppy in order to reformat

put in a dos start up disk and set your bias to boot from the floppy. once booted use the format c: command. if you do not have a dos disk. beg borrow or steal one from someone that has one. dos version 6.02 is my preference. to set your bias to boot from the floppy you will need to follow your mfg. inst. dell uses f2, most other systems use press Del when starting up. keep tapping the button till the bias says that it is starting.
