Long answer short- No. Many infections are quite obvious- the cold or the flu or chickenpox. These you can diagnose yourself. Other infections are silent and may be difficult for even physicians to diagnose without specialized testing.
For example, HIV (on average) is in the body from 7-10 years before symptoms start. Occasionally bone infections stay silent for 20 years. One form of malaria can cause a problem 20-30 years later. An intestinal parasite (strongyloides) can live with you without causing a problem for over 50 years.
So, if you have concerns, do yourself a favor and see your doctor. Sometimes waiting to see someone can make the problem worse than just going in and facing it head-on.
I hope this helps you.

If you are coughing up flem - or blowing your nose a lot and it's yellow - or even worse - green, that means there is an infection. If a cut is very red and swollen around the wound - or there is any pus at all - there is an infection.
Sometimes infections will go away on their own - and other times they won't. If the infection persists - you'll have to go to the doc to get a perscription for an antibiotic.
Sorry this was so gross.

There are a few tell tale signs for these things.
Fever,boils,discolleration,vomiting
you know the drill. However determining what the infection is without the proper test is very difficult to do in a timely fashion.
