This is a question that has been asked to me a lot of times and when people say that cats are afraid of water, well, its not totally correct.
Cats do not like water because they are lazy, because once wet, they have to lick themselves up to dry, and since it is a lot of work, well, cats don't like it pretty much. You might also give some other explainations or theories about this subject.

Actually, some cats do like water. If they were exposed to it as kittens, they will enjoy playing around water.
Sometime in the evolutionary stages of Felinious (I think that is how you spell it) Domesticus, thay were desert dwelling animals, thus they have adapted specificly to suvive in arid conditions and don't rely heavily on water. That is why, as a generalisation, cats hate water.

I call my cat the "water cat". She loves water. She loves a running faucet. She jumps in the shower just after I get out and gets all wet from head to toe. She can't get enough of it.
If a cat doesn't like water I think just doesn't like the feeling of being wet. I don't think it premeditates that it'll have a lot of work to do licking itself. That's a bit much....

I agree with you, that cats are not all afraid of water. My two cats both LOVE water! My one who is only 8 months old runs into the shower whenever I turn it on. The other cat hates it when I try to take him out of water. Plus cats have to like water, I mean the drink it don't they????

Mine LOVES water and has to join me in the shower every day. She'll stick her face under a faucet and get her face wet, looking like a little wet rat. I don't think she would be very comfortable jumping into a bath tub filled with water though. I don't know if she would naturally be able to swim. That part may be overwhelming to a cat.

My cat loves water. When I take a bath she jumps in and swims around. When I shower she sits in the tub and walks around my feet in the water. When it rains she sits outside on the balconey and just gets drenched.
I don't know why other cats don't water..... but mine is almost obsessed w/ it

They don't really hate water. . .just hate getting tossed in it, getting drenched by it. But then again, no one really likes that. I think it's mostly an issue of shock and depth. I've seen cats cheerfully lounge by a bathtub or backyard pond with their tail in the water, or walk through water that's up to their bellies.

I don't know why cats are afraid of water. They can swim though, I seen it. Maybe its like you said, they are just lazy and don't want to wash.

cats don't fully understand what is happening to them when they are wet. It's kind of like a baby trying to walk on sand, they don't understand what's going on

actualy ,I find that it is thier instinct.cats can easily get infected by water if it gets in their nose. When my kitty was a baby, she would always just in water and swim(she would move her arms and legs really fast, almost like she was running in the air of someting).we even took her to the doctors.Well anyways she grew out of that now
