I ask because I had my car broken in to in Portugal and everything was stolen there. If I'm going to feel unsafe carrying the camera around or leaving it in a hotel safe, then I won't take it...

Not to state the obvious, but Bali isn't Portugal. The people there have a much different set of values, so your valuables should be safe there. However, just using a little bit of common sense will ensure that your camera is safe. Avoid the city centre (Kuta) as it's just like "hot blackpool". Hope this helps.

Travel to Bali all the time and have never had anything stolen. Look after your belongings as you would in any country....there's no greater chance of it being stolen just because it's Bali. Have a fantastic time...although I'm sure you will.

Just be smart. We felt very safe leaving our valuables in the hotel safe in Bali. We also did not leave our belongings unattended or in plain sight. And, we did not flaunt our stuff (jewelry, cameras, cash). You should be fine if you are careful and aware of your belongings and surroundings.

If you're hanging out with backpackers the risk increases. I've had so much stuff stolen by other travellers it's just not funny...

Take care of your belonging and it will be alright. If you leave it anywhere in any country, it will disappear also.
