Radar detectors only detect radar when the cop has his radar turn on and operating. If a cop is sitting with his radar on transmitting it is known as constant-on radar and with any decent detector(Escort 8500 X50, BEL v995, Valentine1, BEL RX65) you will be able to detect the cop before you see him.
However some cops sit on the side of the road and when they visually see a car going fast they then turn there radar on for about 3-5 seconds to get the speed of the car they see moving fast. This is called instant-on radar. The only way to help against instant on radar is have a rabbit, or a car in front (0.25 - 0.5miles)of you going fast so that when the cop shoots them with radar your detector will alert, letting you slow down.
Honestly I drove NY--CO during my christmas break and my radar detector(Valentine 1) saved me many tickets.

With the advent of "instant on" technology for the radar, you are better served by putting that $300 in a mutual fund and paying your fines with it. I have been running radar since 1985 and have written 1000's of speeding tickets. Many, many of them to people with radar detectors in their vehicle.
The only time it will work is if the officer is letting the radar run continuously. However, when doing that, he is usually not really watching traffic, he's just messing with people with radar detectors.

Radar detectors don't do any good against the "gun". The gun is turned off until the trigger is pulled so it can't warn you that there is radar in the area. Once the officer points the gun and pulls the trigger your radar detector will make all kinds of horrible noises but it is too late.

A radar detector only detects when the radar gun is turned on.
Whether or not it's aimed at you determines if it's a radar detector or a ticket announcement.

The radar detector sounds a signal when it receives radio waves from a transmitter. The officer generally is required to develop a visual "tracking history" of the vehicle suspected of speeding. This is to verify that the signal is bouncing off a particular vehicle.

when the gun is turned on. A radar detector will sense that the radar gun is on, and alert you. Be careful though because it also picks up security alarms etc.

I must agree with Paul, the valentine one will alert you of radar ahead and behind at the same time. The Radar locator with laser detection runs for $399.00. Add an additional $39 for a concealed display.
