Never heard of fake bikes. You do get good frames with inferior equipment but that is just a case of you get what you pay for.Anyway Claud Butler frames are good but not the Rolex of bike frames.I would expect someone to only consider faking top of the range frames like Bianchi.A reputable dealer would never sell a fake, he has too much to loose.
£180 sounds good for such a bike if you are just starting, then next time you can choose the components yourself and custom build like I did.You might want to consider looking at second hand bikes in the Ad's in Cycling magazine.Nearly all the bikes are ex racing cyclists machines with very good equipment on and have been well maintained as well as often being near mint.these represent very good value for money.
take someone who knows a bit about bikes with you before you buy.Good Luck.

It's all about margin; speed of return for the retailers' £. Imagine the size of the company that you are buying from; how much they need to invest in a product; then imagine that they have to watch it sit there and gather dust on the shelves? Not a very profitable undertaking - so they build the discount into the item - like furniture - where margin is HUGE; but rate of sale is pretty low, or food retail, where the margin in miniscule, but the rate of sale is massive - selling new bikes is somewhere in between - I think, but I'm not sure, it's called Keynesian Economics, but you would have to check. In terms of 'faking' it - yes, it's possible, but why the hell would anyone want to - it's not a Ferrari is it?

people do sell fakes but rarely from a reputable bike shop.
Potential reasons for reduced price as follows
last season
uncommon frame size so struggling to sell
reduced price from supplier
you haven't mentioned a particular bike just the brand so can't really say for sure.
depending what you want this bike for tho it sounds reasonable
But be aware any bike at that price will not be a fantastic mountain bike and will have inherent problems and maintenance or repair issues. If this is a full suspension bike then don't touch it with a barge pole as any full susser under £500 is not neccesarily fake but just not worth it due to the cheap parts

It could be a good bargain. But I would check around other bike stores to make sure.
You could also check it out through web pages and the phone.
Also, does claude butler have a web pago or a phone?
Try this to start with:
www.bikemagic.com
www.evanscycles.com

might be the last few of that particular model and the newer model will be displayed once all the old ones are cleared.
They may also lie about the rrp to make you believe your getting a better saving than you really are.
