I used the system restore function three days ago. Now, I cannot use the function again. My CPU usage is almost constantly at 100% which makes my computer irratatingly slow.

When I try to system restore, I select one of the highlighted dates and it goes through the process of shutting down etc but then when it restarts it say that it was unable to restore to that date.

I have tried nearly all the dates available.

The only thing that I think it may be is that I used Windows Updates and this seems to have caused it.

I have no idea what to do know, I have tried virus scans, etc, so any help extremely appreciated!

alt control and delete, ---> task manager, click on the processess tab and kill off the process that is using the highest cpu usage, you can then goto start-->run and type msconfig click the stratup tab on the box that has popped up and find the process and untick it. the re-boot and this should hopefully solve your problem

From the activity supervisor, swap to the procedures tab (i'm going to guess you have been finding on the purposes tab) and order the procedures by ability of CPU utilization (click two times on the CPU column header). this would positioned the procedures that are taking on the main utilization on the precise. Which technique is it? at present i've got observed Firefox taking 50%-70% utilization if some video is being rendered. What ever the approach is you're able to have the flexibility to lower back song to it and fasten the subject. sturdy success!

Try booting up into Safe Mode. Select Administrator as the Username and system restore from that. That's what works for me.

i can't tel you what the problem is, but i can tell you system restore is the most useless feature windows xp has.

most likely you have a program installed that is running in the background.
check the task manager and try closing each program one by one - some it will not allow because they will be vital windows programs but somewhere in there will be your trouble maker so its just trial and error to find the one.

what updates did you install?

try going to microsofts website directly and search for any priority updates.

do you use norton? it's known to be a resource hogger.

goto-start-run-type "msconfig"-and see if there are any new startup programs under the startup tab, if so turn them off and reboot.

Backup any data you need and start from a fresh OS install.
