Emotional abuse is using non-physical means to hurt someone.
Verbal methods are used to pick on people, cut them down, use mind-games, or just say little things that makes a person frown.
Gestures are often used, such as eye-rolling, sighing in exasperation, sneering, etc.
Any time words, gestures, or non-physical actions are used to hurt someone's feelings can be classified as emotional abuse.

Absolutely. I dealt with it for years from my father. He would say, "What kind of stupid daughter do i have" for no reason. But it was more subtle than that. For example, ever since i was a child, i'd hear him say things like "the whole world sucks" or tell me "oh with your luck, something bad is bound to happen" though i never thought i had bad luck. Example, once, when i was 12 he drove me to meet a friend who asked me to go to the movies with her. When we were waiting about 10 min for her to arrive, he said to me in the car, "Are you sure she's not trying to play some joke on you by asking you and then not showing up? I mean why would someone want to be your friend?" Such comments are so insidious, they affect the victim greatly. I live with the effects of this every day of my life. He was always flying into rages for no reason, I was terrified of him, to the degree that I was actually once diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder. He was an alcoholic. The worst part of all is when i wanted to talk to him about it he would say he didnt remember saying these cruel things to me and that i must be making it up. I haven't spoken to him in nearly 20 yrs. It is not that I am harboring anger towards him, it is to protect my own sanity.

Yes there is!!! Emotional abuse is when someone is not physically abusing them but tearing down their self-esteem. Example, calling them ugly, telling them their nothing, they'll never be anything. Things of that nature. It's actually the worse abuse to recieve. Because it's hard to fight, it's hard to think positive if someone is constitantly putting negative ideas in your head. Physical abuse you can get over, but emotional is a battle. The mind is a powerful thing and when people put ideas in your mind about you its hard to get them out.

emotional abuse would be someone always yelling and screaming at you and calling you awful names and telling you that you'll never amount to anything.
Even though it is basically emotional, the abuse often has physical results...ie loss of weight, low self esteem and you let yourself look like Rosie O....stuff like that.
