He was important not only as a writer of great plays that became great literature, but he was also the first playwright to put his plays in English, the language of the common people. Up until Shakespeare did that, Everything scholarly was written only in Latin, the Language of the learned class. Shakespeare opened the door for English to be a scholarly language.
