If you frequent a place, and get consistent good service, leave a tip. If the waitress doesn't take your order, but assists you for the rest of your meal, leave 10%. This goes for buffet restaurants too, although if they don't provide any service to you don't leave anything. Remember $1-2 for the bussers if you don't clean your table when you leave.

I don't usually tip at the coffee shop, but if they are especially friendly or helpful, I'll leave $1.

1. Yes, you should tip the chef. He is preparing your food.

2. Up to you. I assume you get counter service. Personally I can't stand the tip jar at the register.

3. If you are waited on at the buffet, such as refilling drinks, 5-10% is fine. Obviously the waitstaff is not having to shlep full plates for you.

4. What service are you providing? You are CONSUMING, not creating anything marketable.

1. $1 or nothing, because it's a jar, not a person and it's self service
2. Nothing
3. 10-15% of the bill (my friends tip 20%) I still tip even if I'm not satisfied, I'll just never come back there or claim a complaint to the manager. I just believe whoever serves get the tip. Sometime bad waiters just because they're on training. There's no school for waiters, they need experience.
4. $1 or nothing

I wouldn't tip teh sushi place no.
I don't tip as it is not part of the culture in N.Z as we pay our wait staff a decent eough wage that they don't need it. If I did get outstanding service I probably would though. You see a tip should be for great service above and beyond hte call of duty not just an inhancement to a terribly low pay check.

1. $1 if they have to clear the table. Not if I throw my own trash away. Also, if you frequent the place often, I would.

2. No way. For what? Doing their job? They get paid for doing that already.

3. No way for a buffet.

4. Try it.
