A root canal is the removal of the pulp or nerve in the tooth. This nerve carries vital nutrients through the blood supply keeping the tooth flexible, strong and healthy. With out this nerve the tooth becomes darker, easily broken or fractured or can split leaving the tooth completely nonviable with the only option left being that of removal. Anytime you can avoid removing the nerve or pulp with a root canal its better for the tooth and the patient. So a pulp cap is only a medicated dental material or lining that is placed over the pulp canal which sooths the exposed or nearly exposed nerve. It really depends on how much bacteria has gotten to the pulp as to how it will react to the pulp cap. In most cases the pulp isn’t exposed completely but is visible which makes it susceptible to exposure to bacteria. Most cases we also treat with a round of antibiotics to help it along. Some dentist will jump ahead and do a “root canal” while others are a little more cautious and do the “pulp cap” under the same circumstances. I’ve seen some work well and others not work at all, or for a very short time. Anytime that you can extend the life of a tooth its well worth the effort to try to do so. Once a root canal is completed a crown is deemed necessary to help add stability and to aid against fracture. You should consider that they go hand in hand with each other. The majority of patients who postpone the crown have regretted it due to a sever fracture that split’s the tooth leaving it nonviable and the only option then is extraction. I hope you can see the purpose of trying to save the nerve with a pulp cap rather than doing a root canal therapy. Your dentist is trying to “save the tooth” rather than rush in with the more expensive procedure that literally kills the tooth, not to mention your wallet. Hope I’ve been of some help with this and that you understand a little more as to why a pulp cap is used. Good luck and hopefully you won't have to have the root canal therapy for a long time if at all.

If your young and have a good functioning immune system pulp capping is a great treatment. If it doesnt work you can always do the RCT(root canal therapy). If the tooth stays alive it is always better then if it is dead.

Midnight Sun is definitely going to be published, there is no doubt about that. It will probably come out some time in 2009.
