I am actually doing 1 hour of indoor cycling everyday, and two hours on Saturday and Sunday. I have been reading that for this type of exercise, I need to eat a total of 2,000 calories per day but the difficult part is that I get tired of trying to find out foods that meets the requirements to mention, no more than 5 gm of fat, no more than 140 sodium, no more than 5 sugar, Saturated fat, etc. I just hate diets. What can I do. Is Cycling good to loose weight? should I stop for a while, and cheat my metabolism with another activity? or should I just focus on a diet?

My heartrate monitor tells me that I am burning around 800-900 cal per hour in my spin training/snow riding. Focus on having smaller meals 6 times a day. I live on bananas apples and fruit bars as my snack between meals and frozen berries and yogurt with a shot of grape nuts in the evening. Lean chicken, turkey and tuna make up a lot of my protein. Whole grain cereals, breads and pasta are my carbs. Generally most people need at least 2000-2400 cal per day to lead sedintary lives. If you are only allowed 2000, plus you are burning up to 800/1600 extra calories per day, you should be well on your way to losing weight. Cycling is a great low impact exercise, but too much indoor training will make you stir-crazy. Try and get outdoors on a couple of different routes - you will find as you get stronger, you cover more distance in the same hour of time - burning even more calories.

I ride to eat what I want - 160lbs of me at 34 years old.

My wife is trying to loose weight but has no base.

If your heartrate stays under control for that hour - and I hope you use a heartrate monitor, try something like trail running.

The fact is also, that you are looking at a strict performance based diet. Try not to be so hard on yourself - for one, and an easy one, just stay away from processed foods. Get your nourishment the way nature intended... Whole foods.

No white breads - Chick-filla now has a whole wheat bun for their chicken sandwhich!

Watch your calories from fat, and make sure that the sugar intake is balanced - 50/50 for instance, 30 grams carbo's, 15 grams of that are sugar. It's on the food label - this is the rule I've set for myself

As a cyclist, I found that weight loss varies from one person to the next. So there is no real answer to your question. That said, any exercise is better than none at all. What your doing sounds pretty good. BTW, as a junk food junkie, I hate diets also.

I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic!

Get started today!
