You know... Those hand held things with the two terminals where you turn the dial and touch the two terminals on fuses and things to see if they're any good... Also, if you know what it is, what setting do you put the dial at if you CAN check SMALL battery power levels?

Most meters (like the one you described) have a setting on the left side of the dial that has a picture of a small battery and the numbers 1.5v Turn the dial to that setting and touch the red lead to the positive of the battery and the black lead to the negative. Your results will be displayed on the screen. Hope this helps.

Recycling batteries is not only a good idea, it is a law in the US to recycle regulated batteries, and is enforced by the EPA (for what thats worth). Most communities have a residential hazardous waste collection at least once a year, and this is a good place to dispose of batteries. Batteries contain many heavy metals that can leach from landfills and into groundwater where they can be an extreme health risk to humans if they contaminate drinking water supplies. Nickel-Cadmium, mercury, and lead batteries are just a few of those regulated by the EPA. Here is a link with some more detailed info.

If its a multimeter that also checks voltage, then yes you can. Just make sure you set it to the right range -- e.g. DC and voltage slightly higher than your batteries.

No.

You'd need a DC voltmeter. Set voltage range just above the voltage you are testing.
