A species is a group of organisms which can interbreed to produce fertile offspring. Members of different species either can not breed( eg cat and dog), or the resulting offspring are sterile( eg horse and donkey, produce an ***). ((Lol- it wont let me use that word- i think a mule is the same thing.))

Ah, if it only were simple. This is biology.

The general definition is a group of organisms that can only successfully breed amongst themselves. So, horses and donkeys are separate species, because the cross bred young are sterile (mules).

BUT, you can cross a lion and a tiger and get (I think) fertile young.

ON THE OTHER HAND, you probably couldn't cross a Great Dane with a Yorkshire terrier, even though they are the same species.

Sorry.

All Life diversifies . . .has different experiences and changes in different ways. But, there are clusters of life that are alike enough to breed and reproduce. The groups found in Life that can reproduce together and tend to look somewhat the same, have genetic instructions that are pretty much the same. Life forms with pretty much the same genetics are called a "species".

its a name that scientists give an animal so they can identify it, no matter what language they speak. the species of lion is panthera leo. that is more properly called binomial classification. an individual species is a certain type of animal, like an alligator is a species of reptile, or a lion is a species of cat.
