With recent vocal opponents of homeschooling in this category, I just have to ask to try to better understand the thinking behind it:
Why is it that governments, who decide the laws about schools of all kinds and even develop and approve of some online programs, would allow homeschooling and online programs if there were any proof that by doing so you'd have a 'hermit' or otherwise unproductive member of society? (And if you say that it's because they're stupid or something, remember, these are the same people who decide what goes on in public schools, too.)

Because the governments are awesome! Seriously, the people on here who haven't homeschooled, don't know what they are talking about. I did public school and for the last two years of high school, I homeschooled. I had been a shy child, but I became more social after I was homeschooled. I always got good grades, but after homeschooling I got great grades. These people need to just shut up about what they don't know anything about. It's really annoying.

haha, another insightful, great question.
Really wish I had a great, insightful answer for you. :)
I really don't know the answer to that. But I think it's more an issue of the governments inability to take away homeschooling, more than it is an issue of them "allowing" it.
Here, in Texas, the right to homeschool has been hard fought, and continues to be so. The fight has not been to "establish homeschooling" but to preserve, protect and defend the rights of the parents to "train up their children in the way they should go."
"homeschooling" has been around forever. Public education has only been around since the 1800's and it was created to create workers, not scholars.
As with most things concerning the government, I believe the issues surrounding homeschooling have been spun around to make it "look like" the government is being "generous" to allow a "few" zealots homeschool.
Yet our country (USA, I know you're Canadian) was founded by a lot of homeschooled Christian men. That is not taught in our public schools, in fact our homeschool/Christian heritage is ignored so much that when people are told that, they will accuse you of lying.
The only "approved" homeschool curriculum in the state of Texas is Texas Tech, which is correspondence study of the public school curriculum. My state offers that as a choice because our publicschool teachers are so busy with red tape, standardized testing and political correctness, they can't effectively teach everyone.
It's silly, but the truth is they don't "allow" homeschooling, the truth is they can't stop homeschooling

IMO, ignore the opinion of p.s. employees w/regard to h.s.ing. They are biased against h.s. because it negatively influences their credibility & their bottom line. We do it better, cheaper & faster w/o all the bureaucratic b.s.
There are a thousand (or more) valid & brilliant reasons why no child belongs in our broken public school system. If you want a good discussion of many of those reasons, go to the website below. John Gatto is a former NY public school teacher. You will be shocked & awakened.

Prayer does not belong in public school yet homeschooling has its place. As a public school teacher I am well aware of how schools fail certain kids - I am always aware that homeschooling is not the best for most kids. However, there are some kids who can benefit from it - and there is nothing wrong having more than one way to educate children.
Good Luck!!!

Whether they allow it or not, the truth is, that as long as there are exams, there will be prayers in schools, be them public or home-schools. The public school prayers are less noticeable for they learned to do in silence what they are not allowed to manifest publicly! HA!
