My first thought was kennel cough. and yes she is vaccinated against kennel cough. I took her to the vet, (who I am beginning to think is useless) and the vet said that having a cough for about two weeks doesn't seem like a symptom of kennel cough. The vet offered no other advice, they always rush you out of the office. However I read on the internet that kennel cough is like a cold in people and it sometimes takes a few weeks to go away. She has had a cough for about 3 weeks now. She coughs occasionally, maybe 12 times a day at the most. She coughs hard like she is trying to cough something up but nothing ever comes. Any ideas?

I would get a second opinion. However when did you vaccinate her for the kennel cough because sometimes some dogs cough a lot with in a day or two of being vaccinated (mainly if it is the nasal form). Is there anything she could have swallowed wrong or inhaled that could be irritating her. Also is she on heart worm prevention, because if she is not or you have missed some doses it could be heartworms. Coughing is one of the main signs of heartworms. But that is only if the dog is older than 6 months because it takes the heartworm 6 months to fully develop. I would definitely take it to another vet. It doesnt matter if it doesnt "seem" like kennel cough, having a bad cough for over two weeks is not good period!! I am sorry that your vet rushes you out of the office. It sounds like you have a bad vet. Most good vets will take time with clients, one of the vets I worked for we were always behind because she would spend hours talking to people and we couldnt get her to shut up and get to the next client. But really, most vets will take time to figure out what is wrong. Take your dog to another vet and hopefully you will get better answers. Good luck and email me if you have any other questions.

A dog cannot catch a cold or cough from a human. If the dog is coughing, it can be any number of reasons from kennel cough to pneumonia to heartworms Have your friend call the vet, and DO NOT USE VICKS. NEVER give a dog a human medication without first consulting a veterinarian.. Many human medications can do severe harm or killl your your pet.

I just went to my vet cause my puppy is coughing the same way (also has a runny nose)...and I too got the vaccination for my puppy. But they said it's like the flu shot (not always preventative)...they checked his throat (press somewhat firmly on his throat and see if he coughs)...this is how they tested...also a stethascope....diagnosis....kennel cough. I got some meds for him to reduce the pain of the cold (like we have). Try another vet, seems like you might be going through the same thing...if there is no other vet...try the shelter they have licenced vets there too....or a kennel. Good luck! We're going to have a vics steam bath tonight too (vet recommended)!

You are right, it is kennel cough (bordatella). I'd take her to another vet, yours sounds useless and irresponsible. Your dogs needs to get some medicine in her (canine antibiotic and cough suppressant). Coughing for this long a period is not very good or comfortable for your dog. Take her now.

Also, bordatella is quite contagious, so if she's around other dogs, she will spread it.

Good luck!

My dog had a cough associated with heart problems. She coughed like she was trying to cough up something, but never did. She was able to live quite a few years after being diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Medications helped her to live out the rest of her life comfortably. You might want to mention it to your vet, or get a second opinion.
