my fiancee has an 11 year old brother. He hurt his fingers sledding and he got x-rays last night. Two buckle fractures in two fingers. They say that they are putting a cast on his hand? has anyone heard about this? i have never heard of casting fingers, neither has his mother. we were just wondering if anyone has any past experience. The fractures are in his fingers and they are not displaced or anything, just a simple fracture! Thanks so much, just dont wand him to spend 6 weeks in a cast if he doesnt need to! thanks, once again!

ok for people who dont know. fingers never get casted(it does no good unless they are shattered) I am a nurse aid and a medical assistent. I have seen so many kids even get buckle fractures in their fingers and unless it is a thumb they didnt cast it. Should we talk to the doctor about an alternative? such as a brace or something? what would be the best?

Buckle fractures are fractures that are a bend in the bone. Yes, fingers can be casted. If it is his 4th and 5th fingers he will get a ulnar gutter cast. If it is his thumb, he will get a thumb spica cast. The cast will extend from right below his finger tips to near his elbow, like a regular short arm cast, but over the fracture sites. Next question, did the report say fractured fingers or metacarpals? The metacarpals are the bones in the hand, not the fingers themselves. Still need the same treatment though. Usually at our office we cast them for 3 weeks and see them back in 3 weeks for xrays out of cast and decide from there based on the xray if they can stay out, get a splint they can remove or go back into a cast.

Of course he needs a cast! A buckle fracture is still a fracture! My daugter had one in her wrist last summer. It must be put back in place to heal properly and it will hurt a lot less if it is kept immobile by a cast. Unfortunately casts are a part of life for most children at one point or another.

It depends what bone in your arm you broke. I had a buckle fracture. It was the bone farthest away from my thumb. I had a cast up to my shoulder. It's really weird. You break your wrist but they treat you like you broke your elbow.

the fractures maybe very near the growth plate in his fingers, my son broke his elbow a little over a year ago and they casted him they said that fractures very close to a growth plate and joint are casted to insure the bast healing
