Back in the 1950's Catholic Schools were tough. Over time they have changed. I mean when you think abou it about 20 years ago teachers could paddle children. It is just you hear all the rumors about nuns..and etc. Many Catholic schools the teachers are just like teachers now days. Don't let the rumors sink too deep.

A lot of Catholic schools used to be very strict and yes there were abuses by both the priests and nun. Its not like that anymore. If a teacher would hit a student now, they would be turned in for child abuse. I hear more about abuses towards students in public schools now. Recently a teacher was arrested in a public school for locking a disabled student in a bathroom for 8 hours a day for misbehaving. Catholic schools are much different than they used to be.

I can only talk about Catholic schools in Europe, not the ones in the United States. I went to Catholic school in Germany. My school was connected to the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (aka Loreto Sisters) and had a convent attached.
Some of the subjects were taught by sisters, but I mostly had secular teachers. It was an all-girls school, and our headmaster was a Catholic priest.
We were never hit. The school was and is subject to German law, and physically abusing a pupil was and is not permitted. I never heard of anybody being hit either. My mother went to that school as a boarding student in the late 1960s, and neither she nor her classmates were ever hit.
Our sisters were actually quite cool (went there in the 80s and 90s), and I remember one of them helping us put together a Madonna musical number, complete with outrageous make-up and costumes during a class trip. We were about 12 or 13 years old... Aah, the good old times. Smile.

In the old days yes. There are a lot of stories of nuns cracking students with rulers and stuff. But then, that was allowed in public schools too. When I went to Elementary (public) school back in the 1960s, the principal was allowed to "paddle" you for just about anything you did wrong. Believe me...I was as good as gold!
But my nephews attend Catholic school now, and no...it's not like that any more..just like the public schools no longer use corporal punishment.
Although...the threat of being "paddled" might help out with some of those behavior problems! =D

When I went to one, yes, they could and did hit you.
If you or your parents didn't like it they said, there is the door.
You pay to go to a Catholic school.
It is considered private. They can kick you out. As a matter of fact I was hit once. Not bad though.
They were brothers.
If you really got bad, they would take off their collar and then you would have a boxing match with them without the gloves.
Needless to say they all were very good boxers.
The school was Coyle High School Taunton, Ma.

I've heard the same thing also...too many people old and young alike say the same thing about the catholic nuns. If you decide to go to one you have been warn...but also, there might be some schools whose nuns are not so strict.

False.
I went to Catholic schools for 13 years and know many people who went to other Catholic schools. Hitting students was not allowed in any of them.

It may have been like that in private schools, including Catholic Schools, 50 years ago, but it is not like that now. And I can say from experience that there was very little of that kind of thing even 50 years ago.

I didn't go to Catholic school, but my husband did. He's always been a bit naughty and he tells stories of physical punishments. That would have been 30 some years ago.
