When I first brought my cat in, I had no problem. After some years it started triggering my asthma. Just keep the cat out of his bedroom and he can take singulair (i do) or another allergy medicine. Asthma is triggered by the allergic response to the cat's saliva, which ends up on the hair because they lick themselves, so even if you get a bald cat, he would give allergies. But if your father is not allergic, even if he has asthma, it may not trigger it. Good luck

Absolutely! My mom has asthma and 2 cats and a dog. She does fine. Here are the things we did. Some are pretty invasive, so you don't have to do them all. . .every little bit helps.
Brush the cat regularly--you need to do this, not your dad. Do it outside if possible, so the hair's not floating around everywhere.
Vaccuum often--if you have carpet, vacuum often with a hepa-filtered vaccuum. Often means about twice what you did before the cat.
Dust often--you should be doing this anyway
Get rid of carpeting--we pulled up the carpets in the house and found hardwood floors. My mom's breathed better ever since because carpet harbors things that trigger asthma
Buy an air filter for your dad's room--seriously, sleeping is sometimes tough on asthmatics anyway because they're horizontal. This will help him get clean air.
Air out the house now and then--get those pet fur/dander floaties out of there.
Keep your cat healthy--Cats shed less when they're healthy. Feed them good food, and keep an eye out for signs of sickness.

There isn't anything that you can really do....my sister had a cat..and she gets severe reactions to the fur...she nearly died! Even when she had her inhalers and meds...she still got sick..the cat hair stays on the rugs, and couches and jackets and just nearly everywhere....(she had to give the cat away) but, maybe it depends on the amount of asthma, and how it is treated and or how severe the illness..etc.. I am not sure...maybe ask a doctor.
I think that if you have a cat...it is either a cat that stays outdoors most of the time...or your father may have to meet you elsewhere!

Get a short hair! Or hairless! Take your Dad to the pet store. Let him hold the kitten/cats see his reaction. If you do get a cat keep things clean. Open windows, vacuum. Get one of those fancy air purifiers.
