So I'm new to the Boston area and didn't get a chance to get my second tattoo before I moved. My first was done by this guy in the Bronx who is really well known and came highly recommended, and the tat looks great. I get compliments on detail, color, etc. I wish it were easier to go back down to the Bronx and get all my tats there, but it's not.

So, I'm looking for an artist in Boston that has the same credentials. I'm not saying he/she has to have tattooed celebrities...just that they have a good reputation and portfolio. I've gone to see one guy in Boston already who was on an online article for being a hot stuff artist in Boston, but he wanted to charge me $200 bucks for this relatively small black cross, with no detail in it whatsoever. That seems to be the problem with "famous" artists...they feel they can charge an arm and a leg because of their name.

Does anyone here in Boston know a shop that I'd be impressed with? I'd prefer one that has a website, so I can view the work.

I'd have to refer Fat Ram's Tattoo Studio as well. I personally have not had any work done there, but several friends have, and if I get more tats that is probably the studio I will visit.

Chameleon is the tattoo studio in the Garage at Harvard Square. I have a relatively simple tattoo that I obtained there. My only complaint is that they are pricey.

One other suggestion is the Boston Tattoo Convention. Many amazing artists gather there every October and I would definetly recommend it for several reasons. You can check them out further at the website.

It sounds like a beautiful symbol. Instead of a tattoo, perhaps you can have someone draw it for you, or make a paper-cut to hang on your wall? Maybe use it on the wedding invitation. Tattoos are forbidden by Jewish law. For non-tattoo purposes, I bet Unique Simchas in Brookline, MA will be able to incorporate your names into such a symbol. Also check out Kolbo (also in Brookline) for leads on Jewish calligraphers local to Boston. There are many Jewish artists in Greater Boston.

I live in Boston and I have gotten all 3 of my tattoos in New Hampshire...I think most people travel to NH b/c it was just legalized in Mass a few years ago and haven't had the time to get established.
I would probably check out the Garage in Harvard Square, ever been there? I got a few piercings there and I've checked out some of their tattoo work and it looks pretty good.
Good luck!

if you are getting just a simple black cross then why does it need to be a talented artist? not that you'd want to go to somebody who has no tattoo experience or anything but good artists charge money for their time. it's not their fault you don't want to get a good tattoo from them. i would rethink the plain black cross. many good artists charge by the hour no matter what you get. here is a link to custom tattoo artists but they may not be what you're looking for.
