Controlled and legal immigration is great for the economy, that is as long as we don't let in freeloaders who will leach off the welfare state.

Depends on what Immigrants we are talking about. History has taught us that every time a new wave of immigrants from a different area of the world moves in, those here previously are pushed up a notch and the new immigrants inherit the slums they leave behind. Immigrants coming from Europe have always been builders of this country, but today the "immigrants" are takers of services tax payers pay for, and reapers of benefits from social organizations that decent, hard working Americans could never benefit from; even though they have spent their entire life living and working and paying taxes in this country.

LEGAL immigration helped in the late 1800s. Immigration was controlled.
It is a different world today and the ILLEGAL alien criminals are destroying America. They do not help in ANY way. The steal jobs from hard working citizens. They STEAL identities from citizens. They destroy our schools and health care system. They don't pay taxes! They even DEMAND rights they don't deserve.
Bottom line, we don't need them or want them. Deport ALL illegal alien criminals and jail the employers that hire them.

Immigration always helps business. It provides a large pool of desperate workers who will undercut the citizen workforce. It always lowers the wages and conditions of American workers. But it's real good for business owners.

It benefited business: cheaper labor, willing to work under awful conditions, and increased the market for domestic goods (more consumers).

They came legally and they contributed to the economy. They did sneak in, they didn't steal social security numbers and they didn't demand government services.
