Don't be overly discouraged, "Shitz" are by nature a very independent and aloof breed.
As a previous poster mentioned, he will connect you with his food, playtime, etc; however, don't expect this dog to be the "follow you everywhere you go" type.
You will need to be firm with this animal as far as who the couch, bed, chairs, etc, belong to as they can be territorial if allowed to be.
Have fun with your dog and a bond will build over time, but do note that contrary to what some biased "shitz" owners will tell you, these dogs are by nature a bit stubborn, independent, and WILL test your dominance. Be the leader!!!

When it come to a temperament of a Shih Tzu you would never run across a better one than a Shih Tzu's. Shih Tzu's are bred to be lap dogs and lap dogs only.
They love to be pamper and they are very loving dogs. They also can be the most stubborn dogs too. All in a cute way though. The best thing you can do is put him on you lap and just pet him. If he isn't willing to sit on your lap then sit on the floor with him and just pet him. I have eight Shih Tzu's and each one of them have their own temperament. I have one that comes to you only if she wants petted, then I have one that wants to be held all the time. They are here to love and be loved.
Sometimes A Shih Tzu will pick one member of your family and just stay with that person. I wish you luck with your Shih Tzu because once a Shih Tzu loves you there is no better felling than that. Just give him your love and soon you will connect. Just prepared those little stinkers can be so stubborn.

Food will help you connect. Take him for a long walk, like a hike in the woods. My dog always follows me around the house after that.

I don't have personal experience with them but, everyone I know who has had them say they are very loveable. You should be affectionate with any dog, starting when they are pups. It will help them become sweet pets.
