to do so. If he thinks he's suffering from depression, what should he do? What should I encourage him to do?

I applaud him for admitting that he's suffering from depression. Please encourage him to see his doctor & tell him how he's feeling. The doctor will no doubt put him on an antidepressant, but if he doesn't, tell your b/f to ask for something. (Lexapro works real well) If he doesn't recommend getting into counseling, then suggest it to your b/f. If your b/f is not too deeply depressed, then maybe the medication will be all he needs to get him through, but therapy will help. Also suggest that your b/f get out for daily walks or engage in some type of exercise. Maybe you could walk together? I wish him all the best. Your b/f is very lucky to have such a caring g/f. Your support will mean the world to him. :)

He needs to go to his family doctor, talk to him about it, most family doctors have no problem prescribing medication for depression. If there is a specific thing from his past that is causing the depression, he may want to consider a therapist to talk to about it. Sometimes all it takes is getting the incident out in the open to relieve some of the negative feelings.

First off, he needs to see a doctor. Go with him so hes comfortable, because his problem may just need some medication. If the doc suggests therapy, help him to find someone he will feel easiest talking to. Some guys would rather talk their problems over with a male therapist.
Most of all, when hes first starting all this, he may feel worse before he feels better, and he'll need you to be there for him and listen.
I wish him the best and good luck to you both!
