It depends on the state and city you are applying for. The most common things you will have to do is fill out a app. then they will mail you a letter to come in and take a general apptitude test along with possibly hundreds of other applicants. If you score high enough on that test you will be sent a letter for a physical and physical apptitude test, and if you still score high enough on that you will get to do a polygraph and another interview with a panel of fire officers. then possibly be lucky enough to get hired. it is along process be patient.

Then if hired, some FD's will have you complete their academy(Such as St.Louis and Chicago). Then you will need to become an Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic.
There is a entire list of State Certifications, plus Federal(D.O.D) if you want certain positions. Advice: Get on a volunteer FD while waiting for experience and get your foot in the door.

There is generally a basic standard of training no matter where you go...however, each state has it's own "minimum" standards.
Your best bet is to search the internet for "Minimum Firefighter Requirements for
Additionally, public service employees are ALWAYS happy to discuss their jobs to the public! Stop by a local fire department and talk to them in person....you'll be glad you did!

I don't know if it is two years or not, but you do have to do some training. You also have to have a special permit to drive the trucks. Requirements vary by county or city.
I hope you become a firefighter. It is a very honorable job.

If you can put out the fire without the fire engine and no hands, you're hired.
