i was told beads represent the Rosary, which ties into the Lenten season, which mardi gras is for. but no matter what people tell you, you do NOT have to show any private parts for them, in fact if you do, not only can you be arrested, but it ruins the parades for other people who rather not see that, or for people who are there for the kids. beads are free any and everyone can get them, boobs or no boobs.

They throw the beads from the floats at Mardi Gras; it's the most thing that is thrown at these parades; Once it's over, however, you can turn in a bunch of them here in Mobile to the Krispy Kreme for some donuts. Now this other stuff folks are talking here, that's on them; I also know of some folks that use these beads for decoration. My mom use them for tissue holders. They really look nice.but just to let you know the deal; Also, the Sunday Mobile Press Register had an article of the same thing and mentioned how some folks take the beads and make unique walking sticks with them; If your interested in the article, let me know. Peace.

beads have nothing to do with showing your private areas. trust me. ive been in the new orleans area for 1 and a half years now, and as a matter of fact, i just came back from the Zulu, Rex, and Truck parade today.
the only people who show skin at mardi gras are tourists mainly in the french quarter. and its not legal either. but they still do it sometimes.
if you live in the new orleans area, then beads and parades are mainly for the children to go out and have fun. adults also, but its not for adults only, as some of you may believe.
the french quarter is mostly filled with tourists on days like this. they are the reason why you think there is a fascination about it. its nothing to the regular new orleans native but fun with the family.

You know, I'm not sure, but I know when those babies come flying off the float, I WANT THEM. I think it's possible we are all brainwashed, but I do not care. Standing on a parade route and catching beads is one of the great unsung joys of life. There's just an absolute feeling of triumph to feel those beads land right in your hand, or have a rider throw them RIGHT TO YOU. It's pointless silliness, but what's life without a little pointless silliness??

It's just tradition, there's really no fascination or anything you need to ponder at relentlessly. I just moved here and it was pretty fun to go to the parade and see everyone having a good time.
