I don't know about the Army but made E-5 in three in the Navy.

I was in electronics and operations and intelligence with no special consideration. I was squared away and got some plum assisgnments (Admirals staff and the like). There was other stuff too but not worth mentioning.

When it was time to reup I was offered NECEP (Naval Enlisted College Education Program) It is a 4 year scholarship at the school of your choice, a major that benefits the Navy and you are appointed O-2 when you graduate. Then you give them 8 more years. I passed for a TON of reasons. Then they offered me E-6 if I could pass the test and a transfer to a new ship making a world cruise; passed on that too. My wife just wasn't cut out for the deal. HAH! I should have taken their first offer!!!

It has a TON to do with your MOS and your military bearing; no gigs, nothing lower than a 3.6 and PERFORMING when assigned tough assignments. The military can do almost ANYTHING that they want with you because you are an "asset"; if you do well then they want to keep you and make it worth your while; they can also be EXTREEMLY creative with attitude adjustment.

Good LUCK!

That depends. The army doesn't say "hey you're in for 4 years now, here's E-5" Not only do you need to earn your promotion points, you also need to pass PT tests, cannot be a ******* shitbag (or no one will put through the effort) and mostly important, there has to be an opening for an E-5 and above position. NCOs are appointed and promoted based on a availability system. I know people who have been in the Army for 10 years and their still E-5's because there just isn't an opening in his MOS.
