We adopted our 4 month old lab/hound mix from a rescue shelter yesterday evening. He has not eaten a bite of food yet.
I am worried, is this normal?
Is it best to leave his food and water available at all times or just at certain times as we are wnating to housebreak him?

He is probably just adjusting to the ne home, it is normal.

Always always always have fresh water available. It is mandatory.

Feed him 2 to 3 times a day. if he doesn't eat it, take it away after 1/2 an hour.

It is normal. You shouldn't be worried! When he wants to eat he will! He won't starve himself. If you want you can try giving him the dog food that the shelter feeds him. Then maybe he'll try eating! It depends when you should feed him! When he starts eating and gets used to it...you should feed him 2 or 3 times a day.

Yes, I agree with some of the things written above. The puppy is probably just shy and nervous and getting used to its new surroundings. About whether to leave the food at at all times it is your choice but potty training is as many people have said repetition, repetition, repetition and if would probably be better to start to have the bond and respect if your puppy sees you giving it its food and taking it out to go potty, not to mention you would know when it has eaten and when it had not to be able to catch him before he goes in your house

Totally normal. He will not starve to death. Just put the food down tonight for dinner. If he doesn't eat it again after a 1/2 hour pick it up and offer it in the a.m. Repeat. Believe me, he will not starve himself to death. Just make sure he has fresh water at all times. Good luck.

Relax, the poor litle guy has probably been shuffled around most of his life. Needs time to adjust. I would leave his food readily accessible and let him go to it. May take a day or two for him to come around. Just let him sniff and cuddle. HOwever, anything past two days of not eating, I advise you to take him to the vet.
Good luck with your new best friend.

He is not eating because he is in a new place. When my brothers brought his dogs over to my parents house to live they would not eat for about the first 2 days. You just have to make him feel at home and he will warm up to the house.

As far as how much to feed him and when. That depends on you. We have always free fed our dogs. There are some dogs you do have to control how much they eat, because they don't know when to stop.

Has this dog been cheked by a vet yet, to make sure he is healthy and all? If not you should do so.

Just leave it out for him. He will get it soon unless, he doesn't like the food you are feeding him?

he may not be eating because he hasn't settled in yet. i'd just leave his food and water for him so that he can eat as soon as he feels comfortable enough.
