go to pet co and you should probably get a large or medium cage and the metal ones are good and put him in there when you leave the house and dont put him in when he's bad or he'll think it's a negative space cages are suppose to be safe places for dogs not punishment( i say this because i put my dog in her cage as punishment and every time without fail she looked right at me and pis*ed then i had to clean it up) just for future reference!!!!!!!!! :-p
i would'nt put blankets in there in case he's a chewer or you'll have a big mess to pick up!!!!!! ;-p
go to (petco.com)

Petsmart has cages of all sizes - that is where I got mine. Your cage is suppose to be just big enough for the dog to stand up and turn around. The reason is that a dog will not generally mess where it sleeps. If the cage is too big the puppy will not crate train - it will poop in a corner and sleep at the other end. Since your puppy is not done growing I suggest that you buy a metal cage that adjusts the size. I have a dalmatian and when I got her she was small but I did not want to buy more than one cage. So I paid a few extra bucks and got the cage that can grow with the dog. Get him a nice soft bed to sleep on. You should not be putting food or water in the cage. You should be feeding and water him before you put him in the cage. The general rule is that 10-15 minutes after is goes in it will come out. So plan your day to have time to feed, water and put the dog out before you have to put him in the cage. Good luck.

The crate becomes the dogs "den". Put a mat or bedding in it. I bought my crate (for a Lab) on PetSmart's web site and had it in a few days (shop around - try SitSTay.com and a few others to get prices). PetSmart and other brick and mortar stores will take them back at the store if it's the wrong size. Get one big enough for the dog to stand and turn around. The crate for a lab should be metal - I'm sure your 4 month old has shown what it can do with its teeth. They also sell a water dish that fits into a gadget that clamps on the side of the crate and off the floor. Use treats to train the dog to use the crate but don't leave food in the crate. You shouldn't be gone so long that your dog misses a meal. Have patience as it takes time to train them to like it. Don't be put off by the whining. The first bunch of times you put him in stay with him - start with a few minutes and work up over a week or two. Then leave for increasing periods of time. When you come back, praise the dog and give it a special treat of some kind; we used a spoonful of all meat cat food.

Walmart sells them, as does Petsmart and other pet stores. It depends on what your main purpose of the crate. If you plan on using it for air travel, then go with the hard shell plastic. If you are using it for crate training and general crating while you are gone during the day, then go metal cage type. I have both types.
You can put a pillow or a soft pad for him to lay on. The cage should be big enough for him to stand up and turn around comfortably. Yes you should always leave water for your pet. It's just cruel not to.

I have a metal one (with two doors) for the house. I use a smaller plastic one when I am traveling.
I would ask the pet store people about what size is appropriate. Just put some towels/blankets and water in there. I put my puppy in as little as possible. SHe is 10 months old and rarely goes in anymore. She is able to stay in the kitchen when I;m not home. At that age though, I wouldn't leave yours in for more than couple of hours. Don't leave it in so long that he has to go the bathroom in. A dog usually tries its hardest not to go in its crate becuase its sort of like their little den. I never had my puppy sleep in the crate over night, she always sleeps in my bed. However, a lot of people use it as the night time bed.

you should get a crate large enough for him to grow into. all metal is the best kind. better air circulation. they have the one that have a separator in them that you can move to as he grows. you can put anything in it for him to sleep on. the time spent in there is up to you. they also have holders that you can attach to the side of the cage that hold food and water. so i will not spill. Petco or Patsmart have them. Walmart also has them. my dogs stay in there overnight. they only have water in there. they love it i just tell them to go to bed and they run up there and get in. good luck! and enjoy your new puppy.

petco, petsmart, and they range from 50-100 dollars, go for one of the larger crates as they come with a divider and it will grow with the puppy.
