My lab does not like rubbing ears, hand on belly, etc. What are the areas dogs like to be touched upon?

I've never found most dog like to be rubbed. They do like a gentle scratching. Most labs have at least 3 sweet spots.

1)Along the spine 1-3 inches from the tail.
2)Behind the head where it meets the neck.
3)Behind the ears where they meet the head.

If you want to pet the dog. Try running your hand down his back. Start at the head, and move gently toward the tail.

Some dogs don't like humans reaching over their heads, as in an ear rub. It's a threatening position for a sensitive dog. If that's the case, it would also explain why he doesn't like having his belly rubbed. An exposed belly is the ulitmate in vunerability.

I would suggest gently rubbing him under his chin. Most dogs like that and don't feel threatened by it. Give him treats while you do this and if he accepts that, gradually move on to other parts of his body in a non-threatening, gentle manner. Continue to treat, as this will help him associate being touched by humans with good things. Avoid touching his belly and behind, avoid putting your arms around him in a hug, as this can be overwhelming to a touch sensitive dog.

The best way to show your love, is to respect his boundaries and sensitivities. Don't force yourself on him and when he's ready, he'll come to you for affection.

My Lab (18 months) doesn't mind ears or stomach but can't stand when you touch her paws. Drives her crazy. So, I guess that they're like people; different strokes and all that (no pun intended). Try hugging and scratching, especially back by the tail.

Try massaging from the top of the head down the neck and spine most dogs really like it.
