Only an idiot would be offended by naming a black dog with the same name as a character in "Roots".

The best dog I ever had was a black & tan German Shepherd named Toby (after my favorite childhood book "Toby Tyler") This was before "Roots" was even published, so my dog had it first!

Uhh not that I know of. Why would there be? I mean there is nothing wrong with naming a black cat snowball! It all depends on what you like. If you like the name Toby go for it!!

No there is nothing derogatory about the name Toby. It's just a name. Besides name your dog what you want to name your dog.

When I was growing up, we had a black poodle named Toby. (disclaimer: he was named when we got him)

Even better, I had a black lab named Turner Brown (google it)

Even though that is what they named the man in roots, I don't think there is anything wrong with it unless you are doing a whole joke on the movie.

Absolutely not.Nobody "ownes" names. If we start to have a list of allowed names for different color dogs i will have to scream.I would draw the line at "******".Whats next,no white dogs named Tim?Bunch of hyper-sensitive a$$ wipes.Screw em all, name him Stymie.
