Merlot is softer tasting than Cabernet Sauvignon due to having less tannins. It is a smooth, dry red wine. Merlot is often described as having the flavors of boysenberry, black cherry, herbs, and mocha.

Food and Wine Pairing: Merlot is best with poultry and grilled meats, but these types of wines actually goes well with most foods.

Origin Merlot originates from Bordeaux in France where it is the most commonly planted grape. You can find many great Merlots from California, Oregon, and Washington.

Merlot is a type of wine grape. It's a red/black grape that is typically used to produce a red wine, called, Merlot.

American & Chilean style Merlots are typically softer and slightly fruitier than French style Merlots. US & Chilean merlots are a great way for a beginning wine drinker to get interested in wine. They are not overly complex nor are they overly dry - just simple wine that typically tastes good. Because of this lack of complexity, many wine snobs and wine afficianados tend to turn their noses up at this type of Merlot (myself generally included).

French Merlots done in a traditional style are typically much more bold and complex. They are much more similar to a good and complex Cabernet (another type of red wine) and are a dream to drink. Twomey in Calistoga, CA makes a Merlot like this. They are more expensive than the Merlots commonly found, but they are quite good. I own several bottles and the next time I am in Napa, plan on tasting and purchasing more.

Hope this helps.

personally I think merlot is a nice easy drinking wine without a lot of tannins(what makes you mouth pucker with heavy strong red wines) merlot is the grape variety, it would be a Bordeaux if you buy a french merlot.

Merlot is by far the most widely planted grape of the entire Bordeaux region and third, behind carignan and grenache as the most planted black grape variety in France. Merlot grapes are used to make Merlot wine, a popular type of red wine.
