Our beagle is pretty well mannered and calm. He just really needs somebody to play with him more. I know the Jack Russell is pretty hyper, but thoughtt hey would work well together. I read two same-sex dogs wasn't a good idea.

I have a 12 year old Beagle and a 6 year old Dalmation, the Beagle is male and the Dalmation is female. The Dalmation is pretty aggressive and the Beagle tolerates her very well. Beagle's are very calm and patient dogs. I have found that when you put two of the same sex dogs together, they tend to fight.

Yea, you shouldnt get two females especially jack russells. I currently have a female jack russell and she is really friendly and loves playing with other dogs male & female. It may work, but there is more of a chance of agression problems. I have heard a lot of bad things about have two females living together. I think a male jack russell would be good though. I have had beagles throughout my life and really want to get the beagle/jack combo. Just be ready, jack russells have sooo much more energy than beagles. But beagles and jack russells are my two favorite breeds of dogs. MY jack russell loves to play with the beagles when she is at the dog park. Good luck!

Also, as much as my jack russell loves to play with dogs.....a lot of time she demands more attention from people. She will play with other dogs for a little while....but then its all about having someone throw her tennis ball for hours. So just make sure you are ready to deal with a jack russell....they are so much fun....but will wear you out like no other!

i had a beagle and i sure the hell miss him so much, but i do know what you mean by they need a companion, i dont know why same sex breed arnt a good idea, if you dont want a mishap and the female gets pregnant then i would get the same sex unless you get them fixed but i think as long as there some other dog to play with i think your beagle will love it, I MISS MY BEAGLE SO MUCH

i think the beagle will be fine with such a companion. a pupy jack russel might get on its nerves sometimes, but when it gows up a bit they might have a good time ;)

and yeah, same sex dogs sometimes have more problems than those of diffrent sex...

If she likes other dogs then it's a good idea. A neutered male would be the best choice. My JRT hates all dogs so I could never get another one, he barely lives with the pack in my house and at night I have to keep him separated from one of the other dogs or there is a bad fight. If she's been around another JRT that's not related to her and she's not grown up around it, introduce her to the new JRT before you adopt. Just to make sure that yours will accept it. Enjoy your new family member :-)
