Photography is my business and has been for some time
I have done hundreds of these shoots
Keep this simple and of all things Natural to the two of YOU and your styles--- stay with solid, coordinated or blended colors (muted tones are superb) and stay away from hard and heavy prints and patterns without fail !! Talk to your photographer-- it is quite usual that most services will give you the option to do at least one change so you can do a second outfit each to get some variety working here and keeping you from having to make a choice from a single "set" of "looks" !!
Stay calm and come at this relaxed and at ease and the shoot will come together naturally and smoothly and the results will be fantastic !!
Congratulations !! Good Luck to the two of you !! And Happy Photos !!

Engagement photos vary as much as the couples in them. A good candid photo taken by a friend could also be nice. I even prefer an outdoors setting with wonderful natural lighting as opposed to a formal one in a portrait studio and it would be far less expensive. If you are determined to have the photo done professionaly, have a chat with the photographer so that he/she can capture who you truly are. Dress accordingly; it's your choice, casual or formal. Best wishes.

What we did for our engagement photo was we went with our theme. We had a beach theme and got our pictures taken on the beach. We used them for our save the date cards as well as for our CD's that we gave out at our wedding.
We also knew we were going with red for the brides maid dresses so we made sure we had red one somewhere so it matched everything.
Congratulations and good luck!

Lately I've seen a lot of people in the button up long sleeve shirts maybe in white or something with some blue jeans on and it looks really cute! Or do some springy colors. Lots of stores have that stuff out now. Maybe you in a cute sort of tea length dress and him in some khakis and a shirt that in a way matches your dress?? That would look nice.

Well you could wear dress clothes or be comfy the choice is yours. We did our engagement photos in our "team colors" we did dress nicely, but not in blacks or greys, we did bright colors. Our pics turned out great. You could also have them drop a tropical background and dress to match..white shirts and khaki pants..or something like that.

While Black/Red will look good together - a natural color is best for our clients (brings out the faces - not the clothing). We have had good luck with light black (see URL port10). If this is an outside photo session - a long lens 70mm - 200mm will give you a soft background (see URL port9). Let your photographer worry about the poses - that is what you are paying them for

I'll let the ladies above handle the specifics of exactly what to wear however, keep in mind that bright colors (like bright pink or orange, a light pink is ok) tends to draw your focus away from your faces and can affect your skin tones if you get any light reflection/bounce from them. Take it from a wedding photographer, those colors can make it hard to create balance.
And listen to Larry above about that pattern thing! :)

Nothing too trendy or busy (plaids, stripes, polka dots,)or tacky(matching western wear or NASCAR shirts). I'd say something simple and classic, maybe him in a white button down shirt, top button open, and you in a similar white shirt. A friend of mine did this, and the pictures came out so fresh and beachy looking.
