An article I found said that you should contact your physician if they last longer than 3 weeks. I think you have hit that mark. But it is probably still his body clearing up the infection, which must have been severe for him to be hospitalized. At the very least you should call the doctor's office and get his/her advice on it.

-the lymph nodes are larger than 3 centimeters, or 1 1/4 inches;
-there are signs or symptoms of an infection, such as a sore throat, a fever, or an earache;
-the lymph nodes are felt above the collarbone, regardless of their size; or
-persistently enlarged nodes, lasting three or more weeks.

Yes it is possible to have cancer at 16, anyone can have cancer at any age. If you've been sick recently with a cold or something this could be why your lymph nodes are swollen. There are many different things that cause lymph nodes to swell. Call your doctor and make an appointment to make sure everything is ok. They might run some tests depending on how big the lymph nodes are and how long they've been enlarged. It's probably nothing but it never hurts to be safe. Good Luck!

i had my worst attack last year. the lymph nodes went back to normal as soon as i felt normal again, i.e. no fever, no throat pains, etc.

was a nightmare. though im not so sure if it should be the same for kids.

wish him well.
