I have a chesapeake bay retreiver that is an outside dog, but I would like to occasionally bring her inside because she is a really sweet dog. However she SMELLS!!! I know that this breed is known for their oily skin-helps keep them waterproof, I have tried bathing but within a couple of days she is back to smelly. Is there a shampoo that i could use that would make her so that i could at least pet her without getting my hands all smelly?

As part of the overall cleanliness drive, add a few drops of vinegar in the dog's bath water. Bad smell and unhygienic odor will be a thing of the past now. But to implement the same scheme for bath during winters would be difficult as the dog is reluctant to take the bath. You can use soda bicarbonate as a dry shampoo. Rub it vigorously and evenly. This is as effective as you have given a good bath to the dog. I also add a tablespoon of lemon juice to the water.

Just found this for smelly dogs:

Brandon recommends an easy home recipe using ingredients that can be found in most drugstores.

* One quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
* One-fourth cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)

* One teaspoon liquid soap

She says to begin by wetting the animal down, then apply the mixture and work it through the animal's hair. Leave the solution on three to four minutes, and finish with a tap water rinse.
I think I'll try this myself! Apparently it is also good for de-skunking!

Caution: Make up only as much of the de-skunking remedy as you can use at one time. It is unsafe to bottle and store this chemical combination.

Professional products should be helpful. if you want to have her inside spring for the 30 bucks and take her to a groomer. After the pro washes her, keep her maintained with a bath every week and a half with a gentle shampoo like baby shampoo.

"The dense, harsh, short-haired coat is oily with a distinct smell and is easy to groom. Brush with a firm bristle brush to remove the dead hairs. While the Chesapeake needs the occasional bath to prevent any noticeable odor, they should not be bathed so often that the oily texture is stripped out. The oily coat helps protect the dog from icy waters. This breed is an average shedder."

When we got our last chessie she smelled foul! But the majority of the smell or odor is from the oil so I suggest going to your vet and asking for their recommendation for a shampoo that won't strip out the oily texture. We did and it was super cheap and worked with one bath.

No cutting his hair will only do more harm than good. You need to groom him every day. He's shedding and nothing will stop it until all his dead hair is gone. Just keep up with brushing and you and he will be just fine.

Give her a bath everyday if you want to keep her inside.
