We went to the dr. earlier today and they gave him medicine for the flu, he's been drinking liquids, and taking tylenol, but it doesn't seem to be helping.

Fever Reducing 101:

250mg Acetometaphin (Tylenol)
200mg Ibuprophen (Motrin)

Sounds like you've already got him on Tylenol so try just giving him an Ibuprophen with that and see if that doesn't help. The combination really does seem to break fevers rather effectively.

Also remember he needs lots cold fluids to drink, thin clothes, cool baths as well until it does break.

I am an Rn and see lots of this this time of year, since you have seen the Dr. I suggest you follow his orders and continue the tylenol as directed. DO NOT wait till the fever is 105 go to the ER if it gets over 103.6. Adults do not normally run fevers as high as children. A tepit , not cold, not too warm bath and as little clothing and no blankets at all. This holds the fever in. It usually lasts a few days and he will feel terrible especially the joints, and muscles. DO NOT take regular asprin as this can cause another disease. Good luck and God Bless

Ok, you've been to the doctor today.
The doctor gave your husband prescription medication.

And now, you're going to listen to the advice of the people on this message board, people you don't know, and take their advice to feed him more medication?

Do you realize that new medications that are taken along with prescribed medications (without the Doctor knowing about it) can cause interreactions that can cause death?

One more thing...you say you just went to the doctor "today" and that the medication "is not working"...don't you think you should give the medication at least a full day to start taking effect before going against your doctor's advice by changing his instructions?

THE BEST ADVICE WAS WHAT YOU RECEIVED FROM THE VERY FIRST POSTER....CALL YOUR DOCTOR!!

Wow! Its scary to see how little people know about treating a fever. Some of these answers are bizarre. Listen to the nurse with 41 years experience.

Cool water baths, cold compresses, maybe motrin instead of tylenol.

Or def what some of the others said, forget the DR. - go to the ER.

I had a high fever yesterday. I just took some extra strength Tylenol and put a cold compress on my forehead and it worked. I woke up without anymore fever.

Keep up what you are doing. Fever should break by morning. If fever goes to 105 rush to the ER

Put him into a cool bath. This will bring his temp down. Also, give him something cold to drink.
