No need to panic... Unless a draft is reinstated, it is just a way for the gov't to be sure they will have readily available men of draft age should it ever again be necessary. You will also have to register when you turn 18.

The Selective Service is the Draft Board and
when a boy reaches 18, he is required by law to register!! He is not being forced to join the US Armed Forces because there is NOT a Draft
in affect. The democrats want a draft, but the Pentagon absolutely DO NOT want a draft.
The ALL Volunteer US Military is working very good.

Selective Service, otherwise known as "The Draft" is a requirement that all 18 years and older males must enroll in. In a nut shell the selective service is a form of keeping a record of all individuals in the case of national emergencies.
Although the draft probably won't be re-instated ever again, registering with the selective service in tern registers you as a individual who is able to defend our country in the time of desperate need. Your brother is not being forced to join the military (as we have 100% volunteer basis for military service), he is simply asked to step up to the call of duty if for some reason everyone who is already serving basically....cannot serve anymore. Here's alot more information on-line here.

The Selective Service System is an independent federal agency operating with permanent authorization under the Military Selective Service Act (50 U.S.C. App. 451 et seq.). It is not part of the Department of Defense; however, it exists to serve the emergency manpower needs of the Military by conscripting untrained manpower, or personnel with professional health care skills, if directed by Congress and the President in a national crisis. Its statutory missions also include being ready to administer an alternative service program, in lieu of military service for men classified as conscientious objectors.
Today, the Selective Service System continues to satisfy its statutory obligations while providing the only time-tested mechanism to backup the all-volunteer military when needed.
ATTENTION, UNDOCUMENTED MALES
& IMMIGRANT SERVICING GROUPS!
If you are a man ages 18 through 25 and living in the U.S., then you must register with Selective Service. It’s the law. You can register at any U.S. Post Office and do not need a social security number. When you do obtain a social security number, let Selective Service know. Provide a copy of your new social security number card; include your complete name, date of birth, Selective Service registration number, and current mailing address; and mail to the Selective Service System, P.O. Box 94636, Palatine, IL 60094-4636.
Be sure to register before your 26th birthday. After that, it’s too late!
Selective Service does not collect any information which would indicate whether or not you are undocumented. You want to protect yourself for future U.S. citizenship and other government benefits and programs by registering with Selective Service. Do it today.

Ok he's not being drafter you as$hats. When you turn 18 you sign up with the SS so that if we are ever nuked and need to enstate a draft they know who the military aged men are. Everyone does this when they are 18 and no one has been drafted since Vietnam, don't worry about it. Its not an option, and its not slavery, its jsut saying if your country needs you this is where to find you.
Also were there to be a draft you doing good in school is worth nothing, they want the smart people in the military not jsut the poor and stupid, despite what the liberals would have you believe.

It's simply a list of all eligible males in the USA for military service, should a draft become necessary. Unlike another poster, I highly doubt you need to worry about a draft, it's an unpopular policy.
Basically, registering is a fail-safe for the government, just in case it were necessary.

lol, even though there is no draft, every male after turning 18 must register with the draft board in case the draft ever returns, not doing so could potentially ruin you later with the question did you register for selective service appearing on stuff like applications for morgages and loans later not to mention college paper work

He is not being forced to join but he has to register just in case the governement decides to bring the draft back. With all the wars going on it is becoming more and more likely that they will start to draft soldiers.
